Tessa vs Typeform: compare the interview workflow, not just the form

Comparing Typeform with Tessa as "a form versus AI" misses part of Typeform's product. Typeform has AI clarification questions, and its Research Flow product includes AI-moderated interviews.

The useful comparison is the workflow you want to run: a form for a defined task, a research study, or a customer conversation that can also produce a testimonial.

We build Tessa. Typeform details come from official product and help pages checked October 22, 2026. We have not tested the two interviewers head to head.

Typeform offers more than fixed questions

Typeform's Clarify with AI documentation says it can generate up to two clarification questions from an initial open-text answer. Availability depends on the plan.

Its separate Research Flow product describes AI-moderated research with text, voice and video. If you are evaluating interview software, include that product in your comparison rather than treating the standard form builder as Typeform's whole offering.

For applications, lead capture or a process with fixed inputs, a form may be exactly what you need. Adding conversation is useful only when it helps the person explain something.

Where Tessa focuses

In Tessa, you set up customer interview questions and background, then share a link. Participants talk or type without creating an account. Tessa can ask follow-ups and organize findings around the questions you wanted covered.

You can enable testimonial collection alongside feedback. Tessa drafts a short quote, points about what worked and what could be better, and a longer write-up. The disclosure explains that created testimonials are approved for public use by default, and participants can review and unapprove them.

Tessa does not collect video testimonials. If video is part of your request, account for that before choosing it.

Put a real task through each option

Imagine you want to learn why people stop before inviting a teammate. Use the same product background and research question in both products. Then test:

  1. Does the interviewer ask which step the person reached?
  2. Does it use a specific answer to ask a relevant follow-up?
  3. Does it avoid pushing the person toward your preferred explanation?
  4. Can you trace the resulting finding back to what was said?

Include an unhelpful answer such as "I don't remember." A useful interviewer should leave room for uncertainty rather than making every conversation sound complete.

Check the current plan limits, output formats and participant disclosures in the products you try. A feature name alone will not tell you how much work your team has afterward.

You can try Tessa from the homepage. Use a customer situation you know well enough to recognize when the follow-up misses the point.
